No, you can’t come stay at my house. But listed here are a few places that will welcome you with open arms, even Americans. Please add to the value of this page by adding your comments, both good and bad, about these spots and others in the Chamonix valley.

Chalet La Forêt (super nice) – Located in Les Praz right next to the Petit Balcon Nord X-country track/mtn bike trail. Renovated farmhouse that sleeps 10 in 5 bedrooms. Sauna & hot tub, huge garden, log fire, BOSE stereos with iPod docks, wifi, boot driers, full kitchen. Lovely owners.

Les Aiglons Resort & Spa (***) – clean, modern styling, great restaurant, nice bar, killer spa, walking distance from the Aiguille du Midi and bust stop, remarkable service. 4-star accommodation at 3-star price. I recommend this place a lot and no one has ever been disappointed.

Le Vert Hotel (**) – Comfortable, affordable and happening hotel run by and for skiers and snowboarders. Rockin’ bar with outstanding music and parties, good restaurant, great people with solid local knowledge, pro shop with rental and demo gear. Next to Les Gaillands climbing wall and a 20-minute stumble home from Chamonix centre ville. Best ping pong tournament in the valley and frequent host of Dan Milner’s infamous Waffle House.

Hotel Eden (**) – Located in Les Praz halfway between Chamonix and Argentiére, short walk to La Flégère ski station, train stop, bus stop, X-country ski track. Excellent restaurant, cozy fireplace bar with outside terrace, great service. Ping pong!

Hôtel Le Chamonix (**) – Cheap, cheerful and smack in the center of town. Great view if you’re in a SW facing room. Walking distance to Brévent, Aiguille du Midi, bus stop. Free wifi.

Hôtel du Louvre (**) – inexpensive, centrally located, Walking distance to Brévent and Aiguille du Midi, bus stop, newly renovated.

Hôtel les Crêtes Blanches (**) – cheap and cheerful, centrally located, walking distance to Brévent, Aiguille du Midi, bus stop.

Hôtel Faucigny (**) – cheap and cheerful, centrally located, walking distance to Brévent, Aiguille du Midi, bus stop, wifi.

  3. Hotel Mercure
Easy walk to centre ville, couldn’t be closer to the train station. Good solid rooms, free wifi, great breakfast, expensive parking, but good value for the rooms. Friendly staff. Not a loud apres ski location.

  4. Le Vert Hotel! If you are looking for an excellent two star hotel (with five star service and food) check out Le Vert. The atmosphere can’t be beat: friendly employees and management, an awesome bar (and better DJ than at the clubs in Chamonix), and the best burgers I have ever had (I am american…and I eat a lot of burgers in the states). The management was even nice enough to let me take a quick shower on my last day in town after a day of riding, even though I had already checked out (try doing that at a major hotel chain).

But seriously, even if you don’t end up staying there, stop by the bar/restaurant for a burger, they are f-ing delicious.
