Chamonix Snow Report – Jan 4

Some kids will never learn

I went to bed last night with low expectations after checking the forecast but woke up this morning to a nice surprise – falling snow. is calling 10-20cm at 1500m today, while is a lot stingier with 4cm at 2438m with 15-20km/hr wind from the southwest and 25-30km/hr from the west at 3840m.

This weekend saw knee-deep and light on Brevent with snow all the way to the bottom and, from what I experienced, a surprisingly solid snowpack. Top of Grands Montets is still showing closed for today. When it opens it’s gonna be good.

Tuesday – Chamonix-meteo says 20% sun, snow-forecast shows partly cloudy

Wednesday – Chamonix-meteo – 20% sun, snow showers. Snow-forecast – cloudy, snow showers

Thursday – Chamonix-meteo – cold, cloudy, light snow. Snow-forecast – same

Friday – Chamonix-meteo – very cold, light snow. Snow-forecast – 10-15cm at 2450m

  1. Rumour has it the top of GM isn’t open as there hasn’t been enough snow to fill the bergschrund/rimée. Hopefully this will be enough!

    • Thanks Hutch with word from deep in the trenches … as it were. So I called the Compagnie du Mont Blanc and a very nice lady told me the top telepherique is “closed for your safety.” I asked her about the rimaye rumor and she told me she hadn’t heard anything like that. She was very polite but efficient and didn’t choose to elaborate. The one thing I’d like to add for the express benefit of our alien readers is that these guys are damn good with their assessments and don’t close prime terrain because, “Ah well, we’re not sure so let’s close it.” Nope. When they say something ain’t safe, man, I listen.

And the good news is that she told me it would open on Friday – whoop! ChamonixMeteo calling for 10-20 at 1000m on Friday. Snow-forecast has backed down to 16cm at 2438m on Thurs night / Friday; 20cm at 1923m in Courmayeur. Wax up.
